Joe Rothwell
Joe Rothwell is 25 and works full-time as a store manager. He has two young children but decided to go back into Higher Education. He took a short course, Reading English Literature, and is about to start his second year on the English Literature and Community Engagement degree.
Joe says both courses 'fit into working life well' and are flexible enough that he has been able to study and manage his other commitments.
Joe started university once before, studying law. But he dropped out and he says that, in retrospect, he went because it was 'just the done thing' and he needed 'a bit of time out' to focus his mind:
'With the first degree I started I was just expecting to gain a qualification. I'm partly doing this one in the hope of a better job - but it's also a pleasure. I'm enjoying reading things that I wouldn't have expected to like.
'The course is for everybody, of all ages and backgrounds, and we're all very supportive of one another. Plus, through the reading groups, we will get to share our enjoyment of books with other people.'
