All applicants are required to demonstrate that they have sufficient ability to understand and express themselves in both spoken and written English in order to benefit fully from their degree programme. Your chosen programme will specify one of six language ‘profiles’. You may give evidence of your ability to meet the language requirement through a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS or TOEFL, or you may hold other qualifications in English which also meet our requirements.
If you do not hold one of the required qualifications you will need to take a Secure English Language Test and pass at the level indicated. You do not necessarily need to have achieved the required level before applying, as you may be offered a place conditional on reaching it before you join the University.
Please remember that Secure English Language Tests such as IELTS, TOEFL and Pearson’s PTE (Academic) are only valid for two years. If your certificate will expire before the start of your programme, you will need to re-sit the test. We will verify IELTS and TOEFL results directly with the organisations so you will need to supply us with your Test Report Form number (IELTS) or Registration Number (TOEFL). This may be at the time of your application or some time later, when you wish to demonstrate to us that you have met the conditions of your offer.
If your current language level is close to the conditions of your offer you may be given the option of attending a University of Bristol Pre-Sessional programme. These are very popular programmes, which enable students to adjust to life in Bristol and prepare for their studies. They are only open to students who can demonstrate that they are nearly at the required level, so it helpful to secure an IELTS certificate as early as possible.
There are a number of situations in which local exams or education systems may be accepted as a substitute (exemption) for a Secure English Language Test. These are detailed on each profile page.
