Inspired by the Royal Academy of Engineering, this unique course aims to develop high-calibre engineers who can lead complex engineering projects, vital to modern society. 

After a broad first year students can choose to specialise in mechanical, aerospace or civil engineering, studying technical units alongside students from these degree programmes.

The Engineering Design course is unique in offering the opportunity to study bespoke design units as well as industrial placements, with the opportunity to work on real-world design projects in partnership with industry.

The course is accredited by all of the main professional engineering institutions and is supported by leading companies from a wide variety of engineering sectors.

Why study Engineering Design at Bristol?

Inspired by the Royal Academy of Engineering, this unique course aims to develop high calibre engineers who can lead complex engineering projects vital to modern society. Through summer placements and an assessed year in industry you will gain industrial experience before you graduate, developing excellent career prospects.

The course offers flexible study and allows you to select a specialisation in aerospace, civil or mechanical engineering after the first year, and the freedom to choose from a wide range of options in later years of the course.
 
Through our bespoke engineering design modules you will encounter leading expertise in design research and there are opportunities to work in interdisciplinary teams on applied engineering projects with the course’s industrial partners.

With around 30 students each year, the course offers a close-knit community of staff and students and a highly supportive learning environment.

Successful applicants have an opportunity to gain one of five £1,500 scholarships, which are awarded before starting the course.

What kind of student would this course suit?

This course would suit those interested in a variety of engineering disciplines, with a desire to work closely with industry through placements and design projects during their studies. The strong emphasis placed on allowing students to tackle realistic, interdisciplinary design projects during the course is very well suited to those who enjoy problem solving in teams.

How is this course taught and assessed?

The main engineering disciplines are taught in large lecture classes with students from other engineering disciplines. These units are assessed mainly by exam.

Group design is a central theme of the course and is assessed through reports and presentations that look for creativity and engineering competence.

What are my career prospects?

The majority of our graduates become professional engineers. The quality of our students and the skills they develop mean that MEng Engineering Design graduates are highly valued by companies looking for numerate, well-organised and articulate applicants.
