SWW Masculinity Network: Performing Masculinity

12 December 2016

Dr Eleanor Rycroft and Mr Nick Havergal from Department of Theatre will be taking part in 'Performing Masculinity', the first event for the South-West and Wales Masculinity Network in 2017:
Monday 23rd January 2017, 1pm - 4pm
The Verdon Smith Room, The Institute of Advanced Studies, Royal Fort House, University of Bristol

Who performs masculinity, and how? Where it is performed, and to what end? How do we understand the multivalent and sometimes paradoxical nature of the verb ‘to perform’, which takes on different meanings in the sports arena, on the theatre stage, around the boardroom table, and in the bedroom. Why has Judith Butler’s work on performance and performativity—transformational inside the academy--seemingly made such little impact outside it, where identitarian models of gender persist? And how do performances of masculinity travel from one context to another?

This event, part of the IAS Transnational Masculinities workshop series, brings together researchers from English literature, modern languages, theatre, and television studies, to discuss the performance of masculinity from early modern beards to late Sean Connery films via Victorian male ghosts, the Edwardian stage, and Italian pornography. The workshop features:

Dr Ruth Heholt (English, Falmouth University)
In/visible, im/material: the paradoxical figure of the male phantom in Victorian Ghost Stories

Mr Nick Havergal (Theatre and Performance, University of Bristol)
Masculinities and live performance in the South West 1890-1930: problems and provocations

Dr Eleanor Rycroft (Theatre, University of Bristol)
Facial Hair and liminal masculinity on the early modern stage

Dr Enrico Biasin (Italian, University of Bristol)
Men and performance in pornography

Prof Andrew Spicer (Cultural Production, University of the West of England)
Sean Connery: Iconicity and Performance
