Travel Surveys

The University conducts regular surveys of both staff and student travel to monitor progress towards travel plan targets and to help identify priorities for action and investment.

Staff travel

Staff travel surveys have been conducted around every two years since 1998. The share of staff journeys to work made by all different modes, as measured by the four most recent travel surveys, is summarised in the chart below. This indicates a decline in single occupancy car trips between 2009 and 2016, balanced by increases mainly in bus use and cycling (and greater use of working from home).

These recent reductions in car use are a continuation of a longer-term trend seen since the first staff travel survey was conducted in 1998, as shown by the chart below. This suggests the overall share of single occupancy car trips for staff commuting has been more than halved from 44% in 1998 to 17% in 2016.

It should be noted that as a result of methodological changes to the travel survey and analysis (inclusion of updated travel options and weighting of data to better represent commuting patterns of part-time staff), the complete data sets before and after 2007 are not wholly comparable, but the overall trends for the main travel modes may be considered robust.

Student travel

The trends in day-to-day student travel, as measured by four surveys conducted since 2008, are shown in the chart below. This suggests a significant growth in bus use balanced mainly by declines in walking and cycling while car use has remained largely stable at relatively low levels.

Travelwest Travel to Work Survey

The Travel to Work survey happens every year in March and covers employer organisations in Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Due to University strike action, the survey was not undertaken in 2018.
