Students' Union
The Students’ Union runs a free, independent and confidential advice service called Just Ask. The Just Ask advisers specialise in advice on academic issues such as:
- changing course
- University processes, eg submitting extenuating circumstances, appeals and complaints
- helping students with University hearings, such as disciplinaries, fitness to practice panels and plagiarism interviews.
Just Ask can also help students with financial, personal or social problems, and run a number of student-led support groups. Whatever your problem or question, Just ask!.
University Student Services
The University’s Student Services also provide excellent help and support on all aspects of University life. These services are:
- Students’ Health Service - an NHS General Practice doctors’ surgery, with specific expertise in issues affecting students
- Student Counselling - runs supportive groups and workshops, as well as individual counselling
- Disability Services - a source of advice and information on the support of D/deaf and disabled students across the University
- Careers Service - provides careers information, advice and guidance for all students
- Multifaith Chaplaincy – offers confidential personal support to students of all faith (and none)
- Vulnerable Students’ Support Service – coordinates support for students who are vulnerable to not completing their studies (for non-academic reasons, eg mental health or addiction).
You can find out more about these services, including which service is the most appropriate for a particular issue, on the Student services website.
Other University services that offer specialist support
- International Office - advice and support for all international students, and students studying abroad
- Student Funding Office - advice about financial issues, and information on funding your studies
- Accommodation Office - helps students with any problems or questions about housing (either in University- or privately-owned accommodation)
If you would like a particular problem or issue to be discussed more widely within your department/school, contact your course representative (course rep). Course reps are students who represent the interests and opinions of fellow students. Course reps are elected at the beginning of each year, in each course, for each year group. Course reps sit on the Staff Student Liaison Committee (SSLC) for your department/school.
Course reps will actively seek your opinion; look out for them in lectures and seminars (they'll be in bright green hoodies). Alternatively email the UBU Representation Coordinators who will put you in touch with your course rep.
