This programme aims to develop the student’s interests and capacities in the study and understanding of film and television in ways that offer a useful foundation both for further scholarship and for professional careers. Students engage in historical study, aesthetic enquiry, economic and cultural analysis, and exploration by practice. Students develop key transferable skills in research methods and an awareness of current production methods, approaches and contexts. Optional units offer the opportunity to study a range of more specialist areas in the historical, cultural and professional contexts of the screen industries, and in the theoretical foundations of film and television studies. The dissertation is based on a sustained piece of independent research. This is undertaken through a written essay, practical work undertaken as an individual or in a group, or a placement in creative industry.

Statement of expectations from the students at each level of the programme as it/they develop year on year.
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Certificate |
Students will have a broad understanding of different modes of screen practice and will be starting to acquire research skills. They will have developed a critical approach to scholarly materials, and the ability to conduct a sound analysis of audiovisual sequences. They will also demonstrate technical competence in areas of video practice and awareness of a range of production techniques. |
---|---|
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Diploma |
At this stage, students will be able to relate the skills and knowledge so far gained to more specific/specialist areas of interest, and to be able to respond creatively to challenging briefs. For this they will not be so reliant on established theories and approaches, but will need to think more critically and independently. Some of these options will demonstrate and encourage interdisciplinary approaches to research problems. The mandatory unit on Screen Research Methods in the second teaching block will develop skills of research design in preparation for the dissertation stage. Coursework has to average at least 50 for the student to proceed to the dissertation. |
Level M/7 - Postgraduate Masters |
At dissertation stage, students will be able to formulate research questions and/or aims, and be able to locate their activity within a broader scholarly and/or professional field. Students will exhibit advanced critical and creative approaches to meeting challenges and solving research problems. |
The intended learning outcome mapping document shows which mandatory units contribute towards each programme intended learning outcome.
