Description

Solid modelling computer aided design (CAD) is a key tool used in industry by engineering designers at all stages of the design process from concept generation to assembly modelling and production of manufacturing drawings. It is important that engineering design students become familiar with a solid modelling package during their studies. The CAD software will also help them with their project work with presenting concepts and producing manufacturing drawings. The CAD course will be a means for teaching principles of drawing such as types of projections and dimensional tolerancing. Aims:

CAD:

  • To give the students basic competence in using a mechanical CAD package
  • To give students experience in creative design
  • To give experience of sub-systems design
  • Prepare students for projects in terms of preparing drawings and designing mechanical parts.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students should be able to:

  • Create, edit and present solid models of a wide range of mechanical parts including structures and mechanisms
  • Describe CAD tools and their use for tasks such as assembly modelling and the production of manufacturing drawings.

Describe the stages of the design process and the activities undertaken at each stage.

Teaching details

CAD:

  • 8 Lectures
  • Computer labs: 10 x 3 hour supervised sessions

Assessment Details

100% coursework

CAD 10 credits of coursework for CAD comprising 2 mini-projects (33.3% each) and a presentation (33.3%). Each mini project report will be up to 8 pages including text, diagrams and calculations. The presentation will include an individual power-point presentation and an A3 poster.
