The Right Honourable the Baroness Hale of Richmond

Chancellor

The Right Honourable the Baroness Hale of Richmond was officially installed as the University's seventh Chancellor on 12 March 2004. Lady Hale became one of the UK's 12 Law Lords in January 2004 - the only woman ever to hold such a position. She studied Law at Cambridge and received a starred First for exceptional distinction in that subject. In 1966 she became an academic at the University of Manchester, eventually specialising in social welfare and family law.

Professor Eric Thomas

Vice-Chancellor

Professor Eric Thomas has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol since September 2001. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1976 and proceeded to obtain his MD by thesis in research into endometriosis in 1987. He trained as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and worked at both the universities of Sheffield and Newcastle.

Professor David Clarke

Deputy Vice-Chancellor

David Clarke is Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Law. He studied Law at Queens' College Cambridge from 1968 to 1972, obtaining his BA degree in 1971 (MA 1974) and LLM in 1972. He became a Solicitor (Honours) of the Supreme Court in 1975, serving Articles of Clerkship with Andrew & Co, Solicitors of Lincoln and was an assistant solicitor to that firm until his appointment as Lecturer in Law at the University of Bristol in 1977.

Professor Nick Lieven

Pro Vice-Chancellor

Professor Nick Lieven is Pro Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Aircraft Dynamics. He was awarded his first degree in Acoustics and Vibration from the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research in Southampton (1982-1986) and then went to Imperial College London and gained a PhD in Mechanical Engineering supported by Rolls-Royce (1986-1990).

Professor Guy Orpen

Pro Vice-Chancellor

Guy Orpen was born on the island of Trinidad, was educated in England and subsequently obtained his BSc at the University of Cape Town where he worked with Luigi Nassimbeni. He gained his PhD at the University of Cambridge under the guidance of George Sheldrick and Jack Lewis, during which time he carried out neutron diffraction research at Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA with Dick McMullan and Tom Koetzle.

Registrar

Ms Robin Geller joined the University of Bristol as Registrar and Chief Operating Officer in June 2012 with responsibility for all professional, administrative and support services other than Finance Services. She reports to the Vice-Chancellor and is a member of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Group.

Deputy Registrar

Lynn has been Deputy Registrar since February 2010 with responsibility for the student-facing and education-related services. She was previously Academic Registrar at the University for seven years, leading the University’s teams responsible for all aspects of student recruitment; student administration; and Senate and its committees.

Mr Andy Nield

Finance Director

Andy joined the University in November 2008 and formally became Finance Director on 1 January 2009. He is an accountant by profession being a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants. He was Finance Director of the Bristol Water Group from 2000 to November 2007.
