The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international body which seeks:

"To lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that ensure long-term growth for the Web."

Its primary route for pursuing this goal is through the creation and development of Web standards and guidelines, and W3C has published more than 90 of these such standards since 1994.

It is comprised of member organisations as well as a full-time staff, and the University of Bristol has held member status since 1997. This membership has been based at the Institute for Learning and Research Technology (ILRT), part of Information Services.
