Welcome to the University of Bristol's website. We hope you find what you are looking for. If not, or if you are having problems using the site, please refer to our help pages.

A growing part of the University of Bristol's web has been built using Zope, Plone and Apache. Many pages are generated using queries against an Oracle database. Some components have been constructed using Java technologies.

It has been designed to conform to the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) guidelines. Each page conforms to XHTML 1.0 Transitional standards to allow older web browsers to view these pages. The style sheets - conforming to CSS 2 - also aid viewers with a variety of browsers and output devices. These pages are fully accessible according to level 2 (AA) requirements of the Web Accessibility Initiative of the W3C.

We believe strongly in using standards on the web with a view to forwards compatibility as well as backwards compatibility.

The search engine is HtDig; the alternative search engine uses Google.

Version history

• Up to 2002 – site grew ad hoc
• Mid 2002 onwards – new University Corporate web
  • Site reorganised and restructured
  • New corporate design applied to new site
  • Zope presentation templates used to ensure consistent look and feel
• April 2003 – launch of new University Corporate web
• Summer 2003 and onwards – release and rollout of new University Web template
• Spring 2005 - approximately 140 websites (including live and under development)using the University Web template or Corporate web design.
• Autumn 2005 - University Corporate Web relaunched using Plone content management system. (Information for University web publishers about the new content management system and web templates (UoB access only) )
• Autumn 2007 - approximately 257 websites (including live and under development) using either the Zope or CMS web template. Full list of sites using the templates. (UoB access only)
• Summer 2009 - approximately 341 websites (including live and under development) using either the Zope or CMS web template. Full list of sites using the templates. (UoB access only)
