Small animal neurology group

We provide a high quality, cutting edge clinic treating neurological disease in companion species – predominantly dogs and cats. We use MRI, advanced surgical techniques and electrodiagnostic testing amongst other methods to provide this treatment as well as using the clinical material for clinical research.

We have current active research projects into:

• Implantable Vagal nerve stimulators in dogs with intractable epilepsy
• Optimisation of clinical reasoning in canine epilepsy
• Diagnosis, management and improving understanding of auto-immune canine encephalitis
• Canine neosporosis
• Use of 3D implants for spinal surgery; particularly in the management of vertebral malformations and obstructions to CSF flow

Recent publications:

• Comparison of serum creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase activity in dogs with Neospora meningoencephalitis and noninfectious meningoencephalitis.
• Implantable vagus nerve stimulator settings and short-term adverse effects in epileptic dogs.
• C-reactive protein in dogs with suspected bacterial diskospondylitis: 16 cases (2010-2019).
• Same-day surgery may reduce the risk of losing pain perception in dogs with thoracolumbar disc extrusion.
• Electrodiagnostic findings in dogs with apparently painful lumbosacral foraminal stenosis.
