Maria Paula is a cultural and environmental geographer with an interdisciplinary background in Political Science and History at the Universidad de los Andes in her native Bogotá (Colombia's capital city). Maria Paula has an MA on Environment, Politics and Globalisation (Distinction) and a PhD in Geography, both from King's College London.

Before joining Bristol's Veterinary School in September 2017, Maria Paula worked in subsequent post-doctoral fellowships related to livestock farming governance and regulation (funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Defra) and to flood risk management (EU funded KULTURisk and NERC funded SINATRA), developing a strong interdisciplinary profile to her research.

Maria Paula is currently working on an ESRC AMR (Anti Microbial Resistance) grant looking at the use, prescription and control of veterinary medicines in Colombia and what they might tell us about how to respond to the global challenge of AMR. She is particularly interested in how such practices relate to regional and professional cultures and to the political economy of food safety standards in Colombia. This research focuses on the use of veterinary medicines but branches out onto issues of land tenure, poverty and inequalities.

Research Interests:

  • Environmental Governance
  • Social Science in Public Policy
  • Environmental Cultural Politics
  • Livestock Farming, Risk and Regulation
  • Anti-Microbial Resistance
  • Human-Animal Relations
  • Food and Agriculture in Colombia

As a Geographer lecturing on Farm Animal Science in the Veterinary School Maria Paula seeks to build bridges between the School and the wider university, contribute to the School's interdisciplinary research themes and develop an interest in South America within our strength in international work.
