The Bristol Veterinary School is part of the Faculty of Medical and Veterinary Sciences. This Faculty also contains the Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Pharmacology and Physiology and, although these Departments are located on two separate sites, they have extensive research collaboration.
Postgraduate research in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Science is undertaken on the Langford campus, 14 miles (24 Km) south of Bristol. The Langford campus houses a large number of research groups as well as the University farm. The Department achieved a 5 rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise with postgraduate research contributing significantly to this.
The Department has approximately 60 postgraduate students in total (currently 55 PhD and 5 MSc) with around 20 students in each year of study. We accept graduates with BVSc and BSc degrees (normally 2.i or above) who study full-time for 3 years to gain a PhD (although part-time study is also allowed).
Postgraduate research ranges from basic fundamental studies to strategic and applied research in the themed areas of Infection and Immunity, Animal Behaviour and Welfare, Food Science and Food Safety and Matrix Biology. Many of our postgraduate students go on to have academic careers both within the Department, at the other 6 Veterinary Schools in the UK and further afield. Other students choose to use the skills obtained whilst doing a PhD in the more applied environment of industry.
All postgraduates in the Faculty are members of a single Graduate School. The Graduate School co-ordinates postgraduate training and provides an opportunity for social interaction throughout the Faculty.
