Public interest in animal behaviour and animal welfare continues to grow, with widespread implications for the way in which animals are treated, used and included in society. In response, we have designed a unique new degree course, which is aimed at students who have an interest in the scientific assessment of animal welfare, and wish to study animal behaviour in depth.
The course provides students with a thorough scientific education, allowing them to evaluate the behaviour and welfare of animals. This will enable them to assess welfare in terms of the housing, management and training of farm, laboratory, zoo and pet animals and provide them with the skills to evaluate clinical behaviour problems in pets.
This programme is unique in the UK in the depth of its underpinning science. Students will be taught by members of the School of Biological Science and members of the internationally recognised Animal Welfare & Behaviour Group.
In Year 1 of the programme, students will be based in Bristol, and will be taught alongside students pursuing programmes in Biological Sciences. In Years 2 and 3, students will be based in the Bristol Veterinary School at Langford, some 14 miles south-west of Bristol. The area is in the heart of the Mendips with easy access to theatres, restaurants and cultural attractions in Bristol, Bath and Wells. The environs offer such outdoor activities as walking, rock-climbing, caving, riding and sailing.
