Development of new sites

Do I have to move my site into Site Manager?

No, currently there is no requirement for non-Plone sites to do this.

Can I move my site into Site Manager?

Non-Plone sites will not be migrated to Site Manager, they will need to be redeveloped from scratch in Site Manager.

Due to resource issues, the redevelopment of sites has to be prioritised. Your Faculty Web Officer can offer support and advice with this. It is worth noting that much of the work around developing a website involves careful planning of the architecture and logic of the site. If you are not a priority you can use your time to do this work. This will ensure that once you have access to Site Manager, your site development will be quicker and more straightforward.

Support

What technical support is available for Site Manager?

IT Services will allow the development of new sites during the migration, but the priority will be the migration of the public sites from Plone. Support for development of new sites (which fall outside the scope of the main project) will be available from the Faculty Web Officers depending on resource and priorities.

When will the support for the platform I’m using come to an end? (for example Zope and Apache)?

There are no firm plans to decommission Zope although this is an aspiration. Once Site Manager is an operational service we will be looking at the future of Zope. If your website is on a local departmental or school server you will need to discuss this with your local Zonal IT Support Team. Currently we have no plans to decommission websites which are hosted on the central Apache servers.

Training

How do I get training for Site Manager?

Training will be delivered by IT services and organised through Staff Development from February 2014 onwards. The priority will be to train all web publishers who have migrated from Plone to Site Manager therefore training for publishers who have redeveloped their site from scratch will need to be scheduled to fit in around this.

Intranet content

Will I be able to use Site Manager for my intranet sites?

The University bought Site Manager to host public-facing web content only. It is not intended to host secure content that requires authentication.

Can I migrate my existing intranet content into Site Manager?

Intranet content will not be migrated into Site Manager. Site Manager will only accommodate public-facing content.

If we move into Site Manager, what will happen to our intranet content?

If your site is redeveloped, the public-facing content will be accommodated in Site Manager and the intranet content will be accommodated in Plone. A business case to identify a longer-term solution is being developed.

I have never used Plone, will there be any training available?

Plone training will continue as normal for the time being.
