The School of Economics, Finance and Management aims to provide excellence in teaching and learning within a stimulating research environment.
The programme aims to take graduate students with only limited knowledge of economics, finance and/or management, and to provide them with an understanding of the key concepts and current issues in the field.
Graduates should be in a position to read and assess the current literature in the main fields of economics, finance and management and form independent, informed judgements about it.
Students should be able to plan and embark on a programme of independent research (under appropriate supervision) undertaking a thorough literature review in a prescribed topic area.
The programme will provide students with a sound basis for their future career in a wide range of fields including: economics, finance, business management, public service or teaching.
Students will also develop a range of transferable skills that will be of value in employment.

Formative assessment takes place throughout the year, as students are required to complete two pieces of work in each unit. Work is marked and handed back to the student with comments. Summative assessment is by end of year examination and by assessed coursework in some units. The dissertation will assess research skills, literature search skills and an overview of relevant theory. |

Communication and presentation skills are assessed through written coursework and essays (formative and summative). Students are expected to employ appropriate IT packages in presenting their work. Ability to recall, organise and apply relevant material to specific problems and issues is tested through traditional unseen written examinations. Independent study is assessed through coursework, assessed essays and preparation for examinations. Research, time management and organisation skills is assessed through the dissertation. |

The MSc programmes are closely linked. Each provides a rigorous training to a level appropriate for someone starting to do research for a PhD or starting a job in a relevant area. The MSc programme lasts 12 months, from October to September. It consists of taught units examined in May/June, followed by a dissertation, which has to be completed by the end of September.
The Department welcomes applications from mature candidates and from candidates from non-traditional backgrounds. The Department also welcomes a growing number of international students from Europe, Asia and the USA who add a stimulating international dimension to the life of the Department.

The pass mark set by the University for any level 7(M) unit is 50 out of 100.

All taught masters programmes, unless exempted by Senate, must allow the opportunity for students to exit from the programme with a postgraduate diploma or certificate.
To be awarded a postgraduate diploma, students must have successfully completed 120 credit points, of which 90 must be at level M/7.
To be awarded a postgraduate certificate, students must have successfully completed 60 credit points, of which 40 must be at level M/7.
An award with Merit or Distinction is permitted for postgraduate taught masters, diplomas and certificates, where these are specifically named entry-level qualifications. An award with Merit or Distinction is not permitted for exit awards where students are required to exit the programme on academic grounds. An exit award with Merit or Distinction may be permitted where students are prevented by exceptional circumstances from completing the intended award.
The classification of the award in relation to the final programme mark is as follows:
Award with Distinction*: at least 65 out of 100 for the taught component overall and, for masters awards, at least 70 out of 100 for the dissertation. **Faculties retain discretion to increase these thresholds.
Award with Merit*: at least 60 out of 100 for the taught component overall and, for masters awards, at least 60 out of 100 for the dissertation. Faculties retain discretion to increase these thresholds.
* The MA in Law has separate regulations for awarding distinction and merit.
** For the award of Distinction, the Faculty of Engineering requires at least 70 out of 100 for the taught component overall and, for masters awards, at least 70 out of 100 for the dissertation.
