This programme aims to provide advanced skills and knowledge in a series of topics in water and environmental management. This will equip students with the skills and knowledge to both understand and critically appraise data, develop policy, and design practical actions, and to undertake the planning and management of water and environmental systems. To provide both academic and professional training in water and environmental management through knowledge and understanding of fundamental processes, methods and practical application needed by researchers and practitioners, regulators and the regulated and the support service sectors.

Other skills and attributes are mainly acquired by students through active practice involving various learning and teaching methods. For example, doing the dissertation lets the student practice planning, management and communication skills. Students improve their skills by reflecting on formative feedback from, and by giving feedback to, peers and tutors. |

Students are expected to have developed a solid foundation of subject specific skills underpinned by the interdisciplinary scientific principles of underlying processes that govern the behaviour of water and the environment. Students will be able to apply these principles and undertake more in-depth analysis, and be able to communicate with others in a sound scientific manner. Students will be more at ease in being able to guide themselves in analysis of their own performance, and of setting and achieving their aims. |

Students will build on the foundation of fundamental skills and knowledge gained at the certificate stage, and apply these to practical situations. They will do this with the support of both academics and advanced practitioners. Students will gain an advanced understanding of how academic research is translated into practical measures to support, protect and manage water and environmental systems and ecosystem services. Students will have an expanded range and depth of subject specific knowledge. |
| Level M/7 - Postgraduate Masters |
Most of the work undertaken at this level will be at, or informed by, the latest research findings and concepts. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with the international research community and/or with practitioners from the regulators, industry or the charitable sector. They will undertake research analyses, and document their activity, findings and interpretation as for publication. This will enable the students to be fully conversant with the principles of a research-led learning environment, and communicate the results and interpretation in a mature manner to a scientific and/or practitioner audience. |

The pass mark set by the University for any level 7(M) unit is 50 out of 100.

All taught masters programmes, unless exempted by Senate, must allow the opportunity for students to exit from the programme with a postgraduate diploma or certificate.
To be awarded a postgraduate diploma, students must have successfully completed 120 credit points, of which 90 must be at level M/7.
To be awarded a postgraduate certificate, students must have successfully completed 60 credit points, of which 40 must be at level M/7.
An award with Merit or Distinction is permitted for postgraduate taught masters, diplomas and certificates, where these are specifically named entry-level qualifications. An award with Merit or Distinction is not permitted for exit awards where students are required to exit the programme on academic grounds but is permitted in designated programmes (as set out in the programme specification) where students choose to withdraw from the intended programme but otherwise achieve the necessary credit points for the exit award.
The classification of the award in relation to the final programme mark is as follows:
Award with Distinction*: at least 65 out of 100 for the taught component overall and, for masters awards, at least 70 out of 100 for the dissertation. **Faculties retain discretion to increase these thresholds.
Award with Merit*: at least 60 out of 100 for the taught component overall and, for masters awards, at least 60 out of 100 for the dissertation. Faculties retain discretion to increase these thresholds.
* The MA in Law has separate regulations for awarding distinction and merit.
** For the award of Distinction, the Faculty of Engineering requires at least 70 out of 100 for the taught component overall and, for masters awards, at least 70 out of 100 for the dissertation.
