The assessment of the taught component of a doctoral degree is governed by the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes and is assessed separately from the research project. Progression to the research project may be dependent on the successful completion of the taught component - please refer to the relevant handbook for the structure of the particular programme.
The pass mark set by the University for any level 7(M) unit is 50 out of 100.
It may be possible to exit the programme with a taught award. For detailed rules on progression please see the Regulations and Code of Practice for Research Programmes and the relevant faculty handbook.
The remainder of this programme is at level D. It combines practical, taught and research activities, all of which will be carried out at doctoral level, i.e. the student will be providing evidence of original thought and contribution to knowledge in these areas. All three areas will be incorporated in the doctoral dissertation. Taught elements of the doctoral programme include: Craniofacial anomalies; Craniomandibular dysfunctions; Multi-disciplinary care for cleft lip and palate patients; Orthodontic/oral surgical treatment; Guiding the development of occlusion; Adult orthodontics In parallel, students will be involved in clinical work with patients, putting into practice their research knowledge and advanced techniques in orthodontics. The dissertation will use the outcomes of the literature review but will develop the student's ideas and provide evidence of original thought and a contribution to knowledge in one or more of the principal areas in the management of orthodontics.
