Description including Unit Aims

This practice-led unit builds understanding of the concepts, forms, language, collaborative practices, and creative methods in composing music for film. The unit focuses on dramatic screen works and the “feature film” (whether full length or short). The unit runs in parallel with Professional Techniques, so that growing skill in studio technique support the projects set in Film Scoring. It links also to the start of the Portfolio / Dissertation unit, supported by meetings with potential collaborative partners and with industry guests.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Successful completion of this unit will enable you to:

  • use appropriate terminology to discuss visual, structural and narrative aspects of film
  • analyse real films and excerpts, ‘spot’ effectively, and create suitable musical concepts that complement the film at multiple scales
  • use the orchestral palette effectively
  • create a ‘pitch’, analyse the brief, and discuss your ideas with directors and producers
  • understand ‘business’ activities such project administration, rights, and marketing; and begin to apply your knowledge

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, including lectures, practical activities supported by tutorials, and self-directed exercises.
