This unit introduces students to a range of production processes necessary to safe, effective, creative working in the Wickham Theatre. Covering areas such as stage management, costume design, lighting design, stage design and sound design, this unit will ensure that students learn introductory craft skills that can be used in all practical project units. The unit will be run over both teaching blocks to allow assessment to take place in either TB1 or TB2. While formal skills teaching takes place in the first 5 weeks of TB1, the unit is assessed as Pass/Fail through attachment to one of the following: in TB1 either Staging the Text or Devised Performance; in TB2 Independent Study performance projects. Attachment takes the form of a student taking on a production role (lighting, costume, design, sound, stage management) within TB1’s Staging the Text or Devised Performance or TB2’s Independent Study performance projects.
Aims
Workshops
Assessment will be based on student attachments in production roles within performance projects and demonstration of skills acquisition. Each student will take on a role within a single area of production (lighting, costume, design, sound, stage management). Teachers on this unit will observe and supervise student work and document student acquisition and implementation of safe working practices in the Wickham Theatre. Through their production roles, attached to other performance units, students will demonstrate skills acquisition in key production areas and skills required to create live performance. Students will demonstrate an understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses in key production areas, through the submission of a workfile. This will comprise production notes, designs, drawings, photographs and a 1,500-word written account of their attachment detailing their skills development. To gain credit, students on this unit must complete 1 production role. The unit is assessed as a Pass/Fail. To Pass, students must complete their production roles and submit a complete workfile. Should a student fail to complete her production role or fail to submit a workfile (or both), this would constitute failure of the unit.
