Description including Unit Aims

This unit introduces students to aspects of recent critical theory within an interdisciplinary framework, but oriented towards theatre and performance studies. Over the ten-week seminar, students will become familiarized with historical and contemporary theoretical debates in the field of performance through readings and discussion. They will develop their own perspective on such materials and practice ways to apply and intervene in such theoretical conversations. Topics may include: liveness, media theory, affect theory, theatricality, spectatorship, participation, performativity, object theory, critical race theory, gender and queer theory, marxism, ecocriticism, postcolonialism, posthumanism, and psychoanalysis.

Intended Learning Outcomes

1. To demonstrate a deeper knowledge and understanding of past and present theoretical debates in theatre and performance studies than at H-Level 2. To develop advanced strategies for intervening in and applying theoretical material 3. To engage with performance theory in both its disciplinary and post-disciplinary forms 4. To demonstrate effective skills of time-management and advanced presentation skills 5. To be able to communicate effectively complex key ideas based on a wider range of secondary reading than at Level H, 6. To be able to articulate complex conceptual and theoretical debates based on the analysis of relevant primary texts 7. To develop and execute independent lines of enquiry suitable to M-level
