The Unit aims to build on the previous years’ Dentist in Society teaching and support students in devising, planning and undertaking a research project either independently or with a partner.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The Dentist in Society

At the end of this unit a successful student will be able to:

1. describe the dental and wider healthcare systems dental professionals work within including health policy and organization, delivery of healthcare and equity
2. explain the principles of planning oral healthcare to meet needs and demands
3. explain the importance of and demonstrate appropriate record keeping skills
4. demonstrate the ability to communicate risk appropriately and also to apply suitable interpersonal skills in the breaking of bad news and dealing with complaints

Elective Preparation

At the end of this unit a successful student will be able to:

1. Find relevant research papers in your chosen subject and interpret and summarise the key findings and implications
2. Evaluate evidence from a number of different sources to make effective judgments regarding the extent of published knowledge on the specific subject
3. Plan the study appropriately including: appropriate methods and analysis (including ethical approval if necessary), development of appropriate research materials, recruitment of participants
4. Explain the background to the study in a manner appropriate for a non-specialist dental academic, qualifying all terminology used
5. Present written work clearly and concisely and demonstrate consistent and accurate referencing
6. Develop and work to a set of defined, realistic aims and objectives

Teaching Information

The Dentist in Society

1. Nine lectures, one 3-hour symposium on ethics and Law teaching, two Flipped classroom/small group discussion sessions, two communication skills role play sessions (breaking bad news)

1. Regular supervisory meetings with the elective supervisor

Assessment Information

The Dentist in Society

Formative assessment:

1. feedback from role play sessions (Comm Skills), online self-assessment (required reading)

Summative assessment (60%):

1. Course assignment (case based scenario with 3 guided questions, max word limit 1500, 60% of the Unit mark).

Elective Preparation

Formative:

1. feedback on the project idea is given in term 4.1, with guidance on ethical approvals required and how to obtain these; formative feedback will also be provided for the written introduction and for the draft methods and analysis sections of the report

Summative (40%):

1. a Protocol and risk assessment will be submitted and assessed at the end of January (40%).
