In order to innovate in whatever field/discipline, from healthcare to engineering, education to the arts, we are using visions of the future – consciously or not. But where do such visions come from? Whose visions and whose futures are they painting? Are these futures universal? Innovating towards a better world needs to happen at an individual, community and planetary level.
In this unit we will explore the current field of futures studies from radically different perspectives and course themes. Together we will explore how designers and thought leaders create visions for the future and how these visions help shape more inclusive, caring and radical futures.
Together we will engage with these futures conversations in creative and playful ways. You will learn to use your creativity (no previous training needed) to respond to discussions about the future and experiment with different creative tools each week. These tools will build your confidence in understanding the growing field of futures studies and how to apply them in your own degree subject and your future.

The course is delivered through challenge-based approach to learning and is designed to explore, build and challenge the students creative and critical knowledge and skills through mini projects (creative experiments) and independent reflective work.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
