Description including Unit Aims

Overall Aim: To introduce and develop some basic engineering design skills and develop key skills in some of the main engineering software packages. Design : To enable students to develop an understanding of engineering design and to develop some basic design skills. Computing: To enable students to develop an understanding of the role of computers in engineering and to develop some basic skills using a few key software packages.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, successful students will:

  • be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the environmental, economic, social, professional and interdisciplinary contexts, scope and purpose of civil engineering in delivering sustainable development;
  • be able to demonstrate an appreciation of how civil engineering fulfils its purpose through design as a process of individual and collective learning;
  • demonstrate ability to formulate and solve complex civil engineering problems at the conceptual and detailed levels;
  • demonstrate ability to plan and manage the design process, including an appreciation of the role of formal processes and codified design rules;
  • demonstrate ability in basic graphical communication (e.g. sketching and technical drawing), and in written and oral presentation.
  • have an understanding of the role of computing in civil engineering;
  • have skills in the basic use of computers (including Windows, spreadsheets);
  • be able to design basic objects using AutoCAD;
  • have been introduced to some programming concepts within Excel and also within Matlab.

Teaching Information

Lectures, design classes, computer classes and laboratories

Assessment Information

The whole unit will be assessed through coursework/projects: Systems analysis project (15%), Drawing exercises and Design & Build project (20%), Conceptual design project (15%) and computing practical (50%).
