The aim of this unit is to enable students to learn the skills of managing a significant technical problem that may be loosely defined and is without an obvious current solution.
Students are able to choose their research area and an academic supervisor is allocated in that area.
Work may involve theoretical, analytical, computational or experimental studies. Students may suggest a project of their own, subject to the agreement with their supervisor and unit director.
Undertaking a research project is a significant and wide-ranging activity and, as such, will contribute to a wide range of program learning outcomes (PLO), including those in category A Knowledge & understanding. The precise details will depend to some extent on the topic chosen.
On successful completion of the project, students will: 1. be able to explain the topic of their project, 2. have developed research skills and problem-solving abilities, 3. be competent in solving typical problems of a large project, 4. have developed/reinforced their theoretical, analytical, computational and/or experimental skills through application, 5. be competent at writing an engineering research paper, 6. have acquired and practised oral presentation skills.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
