Description including Unit Aims

Students are required to research and give an oral presentation on a current issue of interest to the Engineering Profession. They will then write a formal paper on the topic. The issue is taken from a list of questions on social, economic, legal and environmental issues relevant to the present time. This Socratic approach to students doing Research and then teaching requires a high level of maturity in the student understanding of topics as well as a sophisticated approach to learning and matching their presentation to the other students’ level of understanding.

Students will be given guidance at the start of the unit on delivering effective presentations and writing formal research papers. A key aspect of the unit is that students also learn to critically evaluate the work of their peers and they are required to provide feedback on their fellow students’ presentations and papers.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course the students will be able to:

  • Apply research skills in order to analyse and evaluate the impact of social, economic, environmental and legal issues of relevance to the engineering profession.
  • Produce a professional presentation and detailed report on such issues.
  • Critically evaluate the quality of other students’ presentations and publishable papers.

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions, which may include lectures, practical activities supported by drop-in sessions, problem sheets and self-directed exercises.

Assessment Information

One oral presentation and feedback on other student presentations (50%)

A technical research paper and feedback on other student research papers (50%)

Submission of written feedback on other students' presentations/papers. This is a mandatory requirement of the unit.
