This is an element of Human Basis of Medicine unit (MEDI11110) and only relevant for MBChB students.
It appears in SITS and in the unit catalogue for administrative purposes only.
By the end of the unit students will have a raised awareness of the complexities of human behaviour and the diversity of people’s experiences in society.
Teaching is provided by the School of Social and Community Medicine and comprises 10 lectures, complemented by 10 small-group tutorials.
In course formative assessment entails students completing a reading summary form each week, which is checked and discussed during the tutorials for Society, Health and Medicine. Attendance at these tutorials is compulsory.
In terms of summative assessment, SHM is examined in Paper 1, along with Ethics and Law. Paper 1 is an essay based paper. For the SHM element of this paper, students need to answer two short-answer questions (out of 4) and two long-answer questions (out of four). The SHM element of paper 1 counts for 60% of this paper, Ethics counts for 40%.
Paper 1 contributes a total of 50% towards the overall HBoM Unit Mark.
