This Unit provides students with an understanding of the care, management and handling of major species of veterinary importance. At the end of the unit the students should demonstrate an acceptable level of understanding of the structure, operation and welfare of major livestock production industries and be familiar with the management, welfare and needs of companion animal species.
At the end of the unit students will have a theoretical understanding of the care, management, welfare and handling of major species of veterinary importance, and the practical ability to safely and effectively handle these species.

Formative assessment: Students will sit a formative midsessional written/computer-based exam.
Summative assessment:
Students will sit a summative End of Unit examination. The Unit marks comprise:
End of Unit Written/computer based exam 1 (MCQ) - 40%
End of Unit Written/computer based exam 2 (SAQ) - 40%
Practical examination - must pass prior to entry into BVSc3
Directed Self Education (DSE) task (Welfare) - 10%.
Directed Self Education (DSE) task (EMS report) - 10%
Note: Students will be provided with more information about the practical examination and the DSE tasks in the unit handbook and / or by the unit organiser at the start of the academic year.
There will be an opportunity to resit the examinations during the resit period.
