Description including Unit Aims

This unit enables a ministerial student to integrate their academic learning with their developing experience of ministry in a long-term placement. The student will write and collect a body of evidence which demonstrates their competence in various aspects of ministerial practice together with the theological and technical understanding necessary for continued development. The portfolio will cover a range of areas, including:

  1. leading worship and preaching,
  2. IT skills,
  3. leadership and strategic planning,
  4. pastoral care,
  5. education,
  6. professional ethics and
  7. the theology of ministry,

The unit will require writing in a variety of forms, including theological reflection, magazine article, address, book review, education plans and worship material.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The unit aims to 1. structure and focus learning in a long-term placement; 2. enable an integration of academic study with the practice of ministry, nurture the skills of reflective practice; 3. develop a range of ministerial competencies.

On completion of the unit students should: 1. be able to demonstrate the ability to reflect on the practice of ministry so as to facilitate continuing professional development 2. be able to demonstrate an understanding of and ability in a range of denominationally agreed ministerial competencies 3. be able to give a theological account of various aspects of church life and ministry

Teaching Information

This unit comprises independent work by the student, supplemented and guided by seminars and tutorials. Preliminary work will begin after year one has been completed and the portfolio will be presented for assessment during year three.

Assessment Information

Summative assessment will be through a portfolio of evidence between 6,000 and 7,000 words based upon a required list of contents.
