Description including Unit Aims
As a focal point in the life and witness of the church, worship is an event in which Christians believe that God is encountered and in which the church expresses its faith and interprets its life and witness. This module will include:
- an examination of worship from a variety of perspectives, including evangelism, pastoral care, the community of the church, spirituality and the nurture of disciples;
- a study of key theories concerning the relationship between theology and worship;
- a study of worship practices and their implicit spirituality;
- theological reflection on the practical planning and leading of worship.
The unit aims to:
- investigate the dynamic relationship between worship and theology in the life and mission of the church;
- encourage critical reflection which will enrich the planning and practice of worship for effective mission and pastoral care;
- explore and critically evaluate the way in which various spiritualities, such as Anglican, Free Church and Charismatic, find expression in particular worship practices.
Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the unit students should be able to:
- relate the practice of worship to the life and mission of the church in a critically-informed way;
- articulate a coherent theology of Christian worship in a way which can shape and evaluate practice;
- show an advanced capacity to theologically interpret and critically assess acts of Christian worship.
Teaching Information
The unit will be taught through lectures and seminars.
Assessment Information
Formative assessment will be through preparation for classes, participation in class discussions and leading a seminar, for which the tutor will give feedback.
Summative assessment will be through an essay of 6,000 words.
