Description including Unit Aims

The Black Humanities Option unit will allow Black Humanities MA students to tailor their programme of study to their own academic interests and aims. It invites student to choose from a selection of UG units offered in this growing field of study, ranging from History, English and History of Art to Modern Languages, Music and Film.
This unit will enable students to:
Identify a suitable topic for a small-scale independent research project arising from a taught unit of their choice.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify and analyse key themes and approaches in the chosen unit of study.
  2. Discuss and evaluate the debates and discourse opened up by the chosen unit of study in correlation with those examined in the wider MA programme.
  3. Work with primary sources and select pertinent evidence in order to illustrate/demonstrate specific and more general points.
  4. Present research and judgements in written forms and styles appropriate to the discipline of the chosen unit of study and to M level.

Assessment Information

One 5,000 word essay (100%)

Conduct a small-scale independent study. Produce a 5,000 word essay that reflects an engagement with the unit of choice alongside the themes, issues and discourses that arise in the wider MA programme.
