Description including Unit Aims

This unit aims to equip students with an understanding of the multi-disciplinary aspects of design of physical infrastructure assets in particular, road pavements and the highway engineering environment.

This will cover the following topics: 1. Introduction and the history of highway engineering 2. Road pavement profiles & types 3. Introduction to road pavement materials 4. Pavement design material parameters: a review 5. Pavement field investigation tests 6. Pavement Laboratory Tests 7. Traffic Loading: an introduction 8. Road geometry: a primer 9. Empirical pavement design: charts 10. Mechanistic pavement design: philosophy 11. Mechanistic pavement design: computer methods 12. Performance of unbound aggregates 13. Rigid Pavements – theory (rules of damage) 14. Rigid Pavements – design 15. Surface Friction and Tread Depth: safety 16. Asphalt Mix Design: Principles 17. Asphalt Mix Design Performance 18. Asphalt Detailing, Construction and Placing 19. Related design case study e.g. airfield or pipeline foundations

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, successful students will:

ULO 1. Have knowledge of types of physical transport infrastructure types (e.g. road pavements; airfields; pipelines) and the technical issues associated with their design; (PLO A4) ULO 2. Understand road building materials, testing principles and their role in the design process and design philosophy of physical transport infrastructure; (PLO A4) ULO 3. Be able to design flexible and rigid pavements. (PLO B2)

Teaching Information

Lectures (20 hours), example classes (by arrangement), computer lab (3 hours)

Assessment Information

Class test 25% ULO 1-2 3 hour exam (May/June) 75% ULO 1-3
