Aims: This unit aims to equip the learner with the necessary skills and knowledge to undertake course design and curriculum development.
It will also incorporate elements of the programme’s three vertical themes:
Description: This unit is intended for anyone who is or who hopes to be involved in course design within higher education and/or health education. It aims to complement units on planning and teaching and on assessment. We will consider: the need for curriculum development, topic analysis, course evaluation and quality assurance, along with key underpinning concepts.
Successful completion of this unit is contingent upon completion of all relevant areas of the PSF mapping document. This will normally be assessed upon completion of the Certificate stage of the Programme. The Unit will not be considered to be successfully passed if relevant areas of the PSF mapping document are not completed.
By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:
1. Understand key concepts in course design and apply these within your own teaching.
2. Discuss the design and planning of programmes of study.
3. Be able to critique and incorporate relevant learning theory into your own practice.
Teaching methods will be drawn from a wide range of approaches including: small group styles, lecture, discussion, debate, presentations, case studies, role play, interactive whole-class teaching, tasks which apply new learning, video critique, distance and e-learning elements.
1500-2000 words or equivalent in other media.
Summative: complete and justify an outline proposal in relation to relevant educational theory.
Formative: group and individual feedback plus online activities.
