This unit is vertically integrated with Accelerated Professional Studies units in year 2 and Professional Studies Units in years 4 and 5 of the standard 5 year BVSc programme. The unit aims to introduce the Professional Studies theme and provides the foundation knowledge and understanding of the skills that they will develop further as the course progresses namely: communication skills; professional conduct, ethics and law; business management; study, learning and critical investigation skills; and health and safety. The unit aims to develop the students’ capacity for lifelong learning and foster an understanding of the importance and application of professional skills for veterinary professionals working in a diverse range of careers.
By the end of the unit students should be able to:

Health and Safety MCQ Examination. Students will be required to obtain a pass in a multiple choice examination on health and safety in Teaching Block 1 before they can undertake extra-mural studies (EMS).
E-portfolio. Students will be required to complete a reflective journal which is discussed individually with their tutor. This is a must pass task.
Coursework. Students will be required to complete coursework. This will involve participation in communication skills training (must attend and engage) as well as written work.
Formative Assessment. Students will have formative assessment in the unit. For example: questions presented in lectures (eg using Turning Point), and / or on Blackboard; and verbally during discussion of coursework and reflective journals.
End of Unit Examination.
This will be a computer based multiple choice examination. (70%)

Health and Safety MCQ – must pass
Assessments will be mapped to the curriculum and will examine the intended learning outcomes.
Passing Accelerated Professional Studies 1 is a requirement for progression into year 2.
There will be an opportunity to re-sit the end of unit examination during the Faculty re-sit period.
