This unit presents students with an analytical framework from which they can begin their own analyses of the cultures of the world&s Sign Language Peoples (SLPs). It provides an analysis of the academic disciplines which currently study culture in general, presenting key principles and practitioners, and focuses on the weaknesses of most cultural research, as identified by Wright (1998). The unit then examines the origins, development and political significance of the Deaf Culture concept, including other texts which research similar terrain using different conceptual terms. It then focuses on the two key texts, Mindess (2000) and Ladd (2003), and examines how they deal with Wright&s concerns, before focusing on the relationships between Deaf cultures and the new concept of Deafhood.
