Description including Unit Aims

The team project involves you working in a group of about six students to specify, design, implement, test, evaluate, and describe a larger scale software system. The precise project will depend on the year and is decided upon by the course director and the unit panel in association with the groups. The project could, for example, focus on the creation of a multi-user virtual reality game. Depending on the project, the system will be developed using a variety of hardware and software platforms which are determined during an initial specification phase. This process as the entire unit will be supported by teaching technologists and various unit collaborators.

The project will involve many aspects of computer science: that may be networking and communications, artificial intelligence, parallel processing, human-computer interaction, computer graphics, and software engineering. An 'away-day' will be arranged at the start of the unit on which you will, through a series of activities and tasks, investigate the problems and benefits of team-work.

This unit is only available to Third Year Computer Science MEng students.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Specify a design for a complex system as part of a team.
  2. Implement and test a design.
  3. Integrate various parts and technologies in order to produce a robustly working system.
  4. Present, describe and demonstrate their system.

Teaching Information

Teaching will be delivered through a combination of synchronous, asynchronous, and self-directed sessions. These include group work, development meetings, and online software development activities supported by coaching sessions and project work
