Description including Unit Aims

This unit will enable students to pursue a topic of interest and relevance to them with the support of individual supervision. This unit is only available to students registered for MSc/Diploma degrees in the Department of Politics. Please note that the Department does not permit the auditing of any of its units.

Aims:

This unit will enable participants to:

  • Identify a suitable topic in Politics or International Relations that can be researched independently
  • Structure independent study
  • Conduct a piece of supervised independent study
  • Produce a written assignment based on independent study

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit participants will have developed an understanding of their chosen topic, gained competency in independent study and demonstrated their ability to articulate their findings cogently by drawing on appropriate sociological material.

Teaching Information

Supervised Individual Study will normally be conducted independently with regular, negotiated, supervisory contact.

Assessment Information

The assessment will be an extended essay of 4000 words showing an in-depth understanding of the selected topic.

Reading and References

Readings appropriate to the topic will be selected in negotiation with the tutor.
