The Unit consists of a 3,000 word project proposal to be completed in the form of an extended essay which includes a review of the literature relevant to the project and a plan of the proposed project. The project proposal is on a subject of the students own choosing taken from a list of practical projects supplied by the Programme Director. Each student will work independently to complete a review of their chosen topic. The review forms the bulk of the introduction to the research project dissertation but is assessed separately prior to the assessment of the dissertation.
The Unit aims are:
To provide experience in the planning of a research project.
To provide experience in the acquisition and analysis of data from various sources including printed and online Scientific Journals, databases, and textbooks.
To provide experience in the use of computer skills including word processing and data presentation packages.
To foster individual work, demonstrating organisation, and time management.
By the end of the Unit the students should be able to:
• plan a research project based on an analysis of existing data,
• collate and analyse data from various sources including printed and online Scientific Journals, databases, and textbooks,
Demonstrate basic computer skills including proficiency in the use of word processing packages
Work independently, demonstrating organisational skills and the ability to manage time effectively.
Directed reading.
The completed Project proposal will be assessed independently by two members of Academic Staff.
Relevant research papers and textbooks. The exact nature of these references will be different for each project.
