Description including Unit Aims

The unit seeks to encourage a flexible, alert and critical approach, focusing on those forms which are particular to broadcast television, and considering the philosophical and practical consequences of such programmes' address to their audiences. This is achieved by having two tutors working together to lead and stimulate open and exploratory discussions based on close and collaborative textual analysis in group-based viewing of selected programmes. Students will be required to do additional viewing and reading, but the emphasis is on close attention and detailed discussion inviting spontaneous and speculative response.
