Description including Unit Aims

An introduction to the analysis of short literary, historical and cultural texts linked to major areas/themes in the discipline of Hispanic and Latin American studies. A selection of literary or cultural texts or historical documents which are being studied in HISP11304 will be subjected to close stylistic or thematic analysis as appropriate to the genre and period.

Aims:

  • To provide an introduction to the analysis of short literary, historical and cultural texts linked to major areas/themes in the discipline of Hispanic and Latin American studies.
  • To introduce students to key concepts and methods in the study of short literary, historical and cultural texts from Spain and Latin America.
  • To familiarise students with the use and interpretation of primary sources selected from across the periods covered by this unit.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will have acquired a basic knowledge of how to analyse short literary, historical and cultural texts linked to major areas/themes in the discipline of Hispanic and Latin American studies. They will also be familiar with the use of key concepts and methods and with the use and interpretation of primary sources.

1500 word essay 33% & 2 hour exam 67%.

Reading and References

A variety of short literary, historical and cultural texts, dependent on the expertise of the staff available in any one year. Students will be informed of each years set reading before the end of the first term using the internet.
