Students are required to complete a record of their clinical competencies in the form of the Clinical Assessment Tool (CAT) provided by the University of Bristol. The Level 3 CAT is issued after completion of the Level 2 CAT in the third year of the programme and completed in this 4th year unit. It is subject to final verification by the university staff at the end of the 5 week block in clinical practice . Using the Occupational Standards to ensure standardisation, students complete tasks that are subject to self, formative and summative assessments. The latter are carried out by assessors in their work placements or by internal assessors within the Department. All work placements are accreditied Training Practices (TPs),have at least one qualified (32/33 or A1) assessor and students are supervised and assessed by staff who are vocationally competent, i.e. possess either MRCVS or VN qualifications. The students' progress towards completion of the CAT is reviewed at regular intervals and any corrective action advised and documented. In addition students will complete a critical review of three journal articles related to a subject covered within one of the case reports submitted within year three of the programme.
