This Unit looks at the administrative systems and procedures that underpin the primary activity of a veterinary practice, which is to treat and care for pets. Students will develop SOPs covering stock management, record-keeping (paper-based and computerised) and confidentiality, outgoing and incoming mail, office equipment and consumables. Students study business record-keeping and learn how to record financial transactions, produce simple profit and loss statements and balance sheets and how to interpret end-of-year financial accounts. The students also develop their skills in assessing the performance of junior staff in relation to specified criteria and learn to make assessment decisions using different sources of evidence and to give constructive feedback on performance. Students will also study a marketing module and will learn how to use a range of marketing techniques to identify client needs, to develop a marketing plan for a chosen new service/product and put this into practice.
