This unit aims to extend and further develop skills of independent reading and interpretation of literary texts in Latin. The texts covered will constitute a representative sample of texts from 2-4 authors, amounting to 700-900 lines. These texts will be studied from the perspective of their generic, thematic or historical inter-relations, as evidenced by close reading of texts, and by consideration of commentaries and secondary literature. Authors covered may include: Apuleius, Catullus, Cicero, Horace, Livy, Lucan, Lucretius, Juvenal, Ovid, Petronius, Plautus, Propertius, Sallust, Seneca, Statius, Tacitus, Terence, Tibullus, Virgil.

This unit will involve a combination of independent investigative activities, long- and short-form lectures, and discussion. Students will be expected to engage with materials and participate on a weekly basis. Feedback will be provided for both formative and summative assessments, and this will be supported by meetings with tutors.
