COMPULSORY UNIT FOR THOSE STARTING THE CERTIFICATE BEFORE SEPTEMBER 2017
Aims: This unit will provide learners with a thorough understanding of writing effective learning objectives and employing a challenging range of teaching methods.
It will also incorporate elements of the programme’s three vertical themes:
Description: This unit will build on and develop elements of the core unit Teaching and Learning in the Health Professions”. It will focus on your skills in writing learning outcomes/ objectives and competencies. It will also extend your knowledge of varied teaching methods and how to choose appropriate methods for your learning objectives as well as how these relate to educational theory.
By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:
1. Explore the theory and practice of objectives, competencies and learning goals.
2. Explore a range of teaching methods in relation to the evidence base for teaching and learning.
3. Incorporate relevant learning theory into your own practice.
Teaching methods will be drawn from a wide range of approaches including: small group styles, lecture, discussion, debate, presentations, case studies, role play, interactive whole-class teaching, tasks which apply new learning, video critique, distance and e-learning elements.
1500-2000 words or equivalent in other media.
Summative: a critical analysis of a teaching session with reference to educational theory.
Formative: group and individual feedback plus online activities.
