Description including Unit Aims

This unit is only taught on the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.

The unit aims to provide students with an introduction to law and ethics, communication and research skills applicable to dentistry with a specific focus on the needs of different patient groups including children, adults, older people, and those with special care requirements.

Aims:

To provide an understanding of the requirements as a registrant for life long learning and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with relevance specifically to the working practice of the dental hygienist and the consequences of professional malpractice.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Be familiar with the social and psychological issues relevant to the care of patients
  • To be knowledgeable in the tenets and values surrounding obtaining appropriate reliable consent for dental procedures and care.
  • Understand the legal and ethical remit and responsibilities of a Dental Hygienist
  • Have knowledge of the role of the dental team in the facilitation, provision and care of patients
  • The student should appreciate the need to collaborate in prevention, treatment and management of disease with other healthcare professionals and with patients themselves
  • Students should understand their commitment to personal development as a registrant
  • Discuss the importance of Feedback
  • Discuss what Reflective Learning and Personal Development is and why is it important

Assessment Information

Formative:

Law & Ethics/Professional/Personal Development/Protection of Vulnerable Patients

Reflective Practice – Each student to complete ongoing personal journal/log book/e-portfolio and opportunity to self-reflect and progress discussed with Tutors during and at the end of the Unit.

Law & Ethics essay encompasses aspects of disability, consent and mental capacity (3 hour workshop with case studies and feedback)

Continuous assessment on clinic using a predetermined standard assessment scheme, graded with immediate feedback to the student by clinical staff.

Students overall performance in the programme will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee.

Feedback from role play sessions (Communication Skills) and outcome questions at the end of lectures.

Failure to comply with completion of formative assessments by the stated end of term deadlines will be raised at the Progress Committee. Any performance not completed or deemed unsatisfactory will be reviewed along with the students overall performance and may affect the students progression. Students overall performance in the programme will be reviewed and discussed at the School Progress committee.

Summative:

This unit has no substantive internal summative assessment. However, the unit contributes stations to a Pre-Clinical ‘Gateway to seeing Patients’ must-pass 8 station Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in various clinical procedures in the following manner:

Personal and Professional Development topics can be assessed within Finals examinations for the Diploma in Dental Hygiene.
