Aims: This unit will look in detail at evidence based teaching and learning methods.
It will also incorporate elements of the programme’s three vertical themes:
Description: This unit focuses on evidence based approaches to teaching and learning. We will explore the research base for healthcare education, encouraging you to identify journals and research relevant to your own specialty. We will develop critical reading approaches to research and identify implications for teaching practice.
By the end of this unit, learners should be able to:
1. Developed skills in sourcing and critiquing evidence from the educational literature.
2. Developed a knowledge and understanding of educational research and evidence based approaches to teaching and be able to discuss their relevance in the health professions.
3. Be able to critique and incorporate relevant learning theory and research into their own practice.
Teaching methods will be drawn from a wide range of approaches including: small group styles, lecture, discussion, debate, presentations, case studies, role play, interactive whole-class teaching, tasks which apply new learning, video critique, distance and e-learning elements.

Summative: explore the evidence base for a particular aspect of teaching practice or educational theory.
Formative: group and individual feedback plus online activities.
