Description including Unit Aims

The study of Renaissance drawing practices in Italy from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century affords vivid insights into the working methods of artists, changing workshop procedures, and evolving concepts of the idea of the artist and of the nature of art itself. This unit will examine the different functions and types of drawing, from pattern books and preliminary studies to elaborately finished independent works of art and final cartoons for works in other media. It will introduce students to the different materials and media that artists used, and explore the relationship of drawing to developing theories of art culminating in the creation of the academic tradition of disegno. The period studied concludes with the beginnings of collecting drawings in the age of Vasari and a consideration of its implications for understanding how art was valued in the Renaissance.
