This is a 20 credit introductory unit in preliminary teaching skills, aimed at preparing students for entry into the profession of teaching English as a foreign language. It focuses on the central aspects of the teaching process and develops the students’ ability to handle the key components of the language system of English as well as the four skills.
In terms of teaching students will develop a better understanding of methods effective in engaging adult learners and in helping them to improve their language. This will include work on explaining the meaning, and form of language as well as the ways of scaffolding and supporting effective practice and production of language.
Students will also learn how to anticipate common language and learning problems, to analyse language in order to be able to identify problems students are having, to select appropriate materials for their students and where necessary to adapt those materials.
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of a variety of teaching and learning methods that may be appropriate with or for adult learners
2. Demonstrate knowledge of terminology for describing language form, structure, usage and skills
3. Analyse language in order to be able to identify misuse and explain appropriate form and meaning
4. Recognise common problems that students from different language backgrounds have with learning English and with specific aspects of English
5. Choose materials and methods that may help students to overcome these problems
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the methodology and teaching methods that underpin materials
Combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions based on Blackboard VLE involving practical task based work.
Summative assessments:
Short Answer Questions: Analysis of Language, (50%) [ILOs 2, 3, 4]
Essay: Analysis of Authentic Student Language, 2000 words (50%) [ILOs 1, 2, 3, 4 5, 6]

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
