This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate and Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units. The Surgical Skills 1 Unit has one core element with the following general aim: -
To provide students with the underpinning knowledge and skills to carry out minor surgical procedures under clinical guidance
Students will obtain a knowledge and understanding of the following:

Self directed CAL sessions 75%
Seminars with videos 5%
Medical simulator session 2%
Webinar presentations 2%
Clinical skills sessions 5%
Reflecting writing 11%
This Unit will have three summative assessments:
1. Online assessment and MCQ (30%)
2. Final written examination (40%)
3. Assessment of performance in Clinical skills (30%)
Formative assessment
• Online activities will provide formative assessment
Summative assessment
Online assignments (length 2 000 words) and MCQ papers will provide summative assessment and contribute 30% to the final Element mark.
A final written (multiple short answer and essay) examination of 1 hour’s duration will contribute 40% to the final Element mark
Assessment of performance in the clinical skills sessions will contribute 30% to the final element mark
